Caspar Melville

It's a London thing: Roots and Routes into Club Culture with author & journalist Caspar Melville on A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/a-world-in-london-324/  The multi-hyphenate Caspar Melville - journalist, raver, scholar, music obsessive, and author - joined us at SOAS radio this week for a chat and some classic tracks. As a consummate clubber in London during the 80s and 90s, Caspar's years on the dancefloor were eminently well spent, as he proves in his latest book 'It's a London Thing', a wide-ranging look at the joys of Black British music in the capital, from South London sound systems, funk & soul parties, underground raves, and now to Grime and South London Nu Jazz. As much a social movement as a cultural one, with clubs as sites of resistance and creation, London's music scene has gone through many incarnations forged by people from all over the world who congregate here, make music, and dance. As Paul Gilroy stated, "if it's about roots its also about routes!" and the vibrant musical hub that London is owes much to migration; particularly the Caribbean Windrush generation whose status in this country is imperilled today, as well as other diaspora communities from all over Asia, Africa and the Americas. This episode includes a fascinating insight into new trends and clubbing history from Caspar via the ebbs and flows of London's music cultures, the joy to be found on dancefloors, and the dynamism of British music being shaped by and shaping our city. Caspar's book 'It's a London thing: How Rare Groove, Acid House, and Jungle Remapped the City' is out now in all good bookstores. Also on this AWIL, new global CDs, and a special tribute to inspirational Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala – RIP.
